Electrical Safety to Prevent Fires:

Surge Protective Devices (SPD):
  • A whole-house surge protector can protect wiring and appliances in your house.  It can be installed at your electric panel.
  • Individual surge protectors are needed to protect electronic devices.  Outlets are available with individual surge protectors built in.
  • Devices with wired connections from several sources, such as televisions with cable service, computers with telephone modems, or telephone answering machines, need multi-port surge protectors.
Protection Devices:
  • Plug-in plastic outlet protectors and tamper-resistant outlets can help prevent children from inserting fingers or objects into outlets.
  • Ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCI) help prevent shocks in the bathroom, kitchen, and other wet locations.
  • Arc fault circuit interrupters (AFCI) help prevent electrical fires caused by faulty or frayed wires.
Wire Protection:
  • Use Metal plates to  protect wires passing through studs or framing.
