Removing mold yourself may be a good way to save money as a homeowner, but before you start scrubbing away at that patch of mold, though, remember that you can only perform a DIY if and when:

  • You don’t have health problems that could be triggered or worsened by mold spores.
  • The mold only covers a small area.
  • The mold is on easy-to-clean surfaces like sinks, tiles, glass, tubs, or metal.
  • If the mold is on a hard-to-clean surface, that the surface is easy to remove such as on smaller carpets or rugs.
  • You have at least some basic protective gear such as gloves and masks to help you avoid breathing in spores.

Once you’ve determined that getting into contact with some mold won’t be harmful to you, it’s time to get cleaning.

Here are some tips from us on how to remove mold from several types of surfaces.

  • For mold on small sections of drywall, you can cut out the infested area with a utility knife. In order to ensure that you can properly attach a replacement for the section that you cut out, make sure to only remove a section that rests on at least two of the wooden beams behind the drywall. After replacing the infected section, use a vacuum with a HEPA filter to clean the room that the wall is in to remove any mold spores in the air.
  • For mold on painted drywall, just scrub away the mold using the appropriate mold-killing solutions that can be purchased over-the-counter.
  • For mold on wooden surfaces, you can scrub it clean with the appropriate mold-killing solutions as well. Take note, however, that if the mold has penetrated below the surface of the wood, this may indicate moisture problems, or that the material may have suffered from flood or water damage. If this is the case, remediation may be necessary, which involves removing and replacing the damaged wood, cleaning the area with HEPA-filtered vacuums to remove spores, and sealing the surface with fungicidal sealant or paint to stop the spread of mold.
  • For mold on simple surfaces such as tile and grout, you can mix baking soda with water until it forms a paste, which you can then use with a toothbrush to scrub the paste into the ground and remove the mold.
  • For mold on non-fixed carpets and rugs, you can take it out to your driveway, and hose down both sides with a mold-killing solution that is appropriate for the material of your carpet or rug.

These are just for simple cleaning jobs. However, keep in mind that there are some instances where handling mold yourself may not be such a great idea, such as in cases of black mold infestations; and it would be safer and more efficient to contact cleaning and mold remediation professionals such as Varney Clean Care to remove it for you, instead. This is especially important if the mold already covers a large area (especially after flooding), or if you’re not sure how to perform the clean-up safely and correctly.

Another time to ask for assistance from professional cleaners would be when the mold is in your heating, air-conditioning, and ventilation systems. Mold spreads by sending out millions of airborne spores, and disturbing a mold infestation might cause the spores to spread and make your mold problem even worse than it originally was.

For big jobs like these, Varney Clean Care can take care of any and all of your mold removal and remediation needs.
