Learn about Cowley, WY

The town of Cowley is located in Big Horn County in the state of Wyoming. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town had 710 residents in 2013.

Cowley was named in honor of Matthias Cowley, who led a group of Mormons that pioneered settlement of the area in 1900. The group was sent by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to find a suitable location for a new community in Northern Wyoming. That same year, they started building the Sidon Canal in order to bring water to the town from the Shoshone River. Construction work on the canal was finished in 1904.

Cowley’s first school opened in a log house in 1901, while the Big Horn Academy, the town’s first high school, was inaugurated in 1910.
