Soda blasting was developed when there was a need to clean the Statue of Liberty without damaging its copper surface.

This process is similar to sandblasting, except it's more eco-friendly. Soda blasting refers to using a non-toxic sodium bicarbonate delivered through compressed air, so that it can remove paint without damaging the components underneath it.

Baking soda has a pH near neutral, is water soluble, and has a buffering effect that neutralizes acids and caustics. It can also be wiped or rinsed away, making it a safe product for both the environment and humans.

Why Soda Blasting?

Aside from safely and effectively removing paint, sodium bicarbonate is eco-friendly and will remove light surface rust, grease, and other contaminates. It's also gentler than sandblasting and won't cause any damage to glass, rubber, metal, or plastic. Soda blasting is recommended for:

  • Graffiti Removal
  • Wood and masonry
  • Trailers
  • Aluminum
  • Stainless steel
  • Heavy Equipment
  • Paint Stripping
  • Boats
  • Engine Components
  • Grease and Oil Removal
  • Fire Restoration

Advantages of Soda Blasting

  • You don’t have to pre-clean. Traditionally, if the equipment or vehicle you’re attempting to clean is covered with grease, carbon, or salt, you have to fully clean the surface before blasting. We clean first so that the contaminant won’t penetrate the coating and cause future coating failures.
  • Less solid waste. As discussed, pure baking soda is water-soluble. As long as you have the right discharge permits, the solution can be disposed via open waterways. The waste volume is reduced to less than 5% and helps cut landfill costs.
  • Prevents rust. When baking soda is on a ferrous metal surface, rust won’t form. To have rust, you need water and an acidic condition. Baking soda neutralizes acids and prevents the release of metallic ions.
  • Unique cutting. Using a soda blast means that we can take advantage of the primary ingredient, baking soda. It’s soft and has little to no effect on most delicate surfaces. You can remove thick coatings from glass without the etching effect. With enough skill, fragile surfaces can be cleaned without damaging them.
  • Cleaning and decoating is simplified. The traditional way of abrasive blasting is filthy, often embedding the surface with contaminants as it’s being removed. Additionally, recycled abrasives can add up and become difficult to clean. Soda blasting de-coats and cleans in one step, making the entire process easier and better.
  • Removes odor. Baking soda is known to reduce unpleasant odors.
