How often do you check out your chimney? Without proper cleaning and maintenance, your fireplace could prove to be quite hazardous, as there could be blockages, smoke leaks, improper ventilation, and even a build-up of tar if you aren't careful. If you find that your fireplace smells during the summer, of if it produces too much smoke while you use it, or you just notice some cracks developing, then make sure to get professional help immediately. Over time, chimney linings can also worsen, and eventually collapse. With our help, we can make sure that your chimneys are clean and you can continue to maintainin a healthy home.

When is it Time to Clean?

There is no clear, straight number to give to know when your chimney needs to be cleaned. When wood is incompletely burned, creosote can form. A fire without enough oxygen emits unburned tar vapors that can eventually condense inside the flue, and become stuck. A buildup of this forms what we call a chimney fire. Combat this by reducing creosote buildup in the fireplace by providing combustion air, which will encourage a nice, warm and cleanly burning fire.

Checking for Creosote

Make sure there is no downdraft from the chimney. If you feel that there is a downdraft, open a door or window in the same floor or level as the fireplace until the downdraft reverses, and air flows up. Chimney Cleaning process Afterwards, wear goggles and a disposable dust mask, and use a flashlight and grab a fireplace poker. When you scratch the black surface above the damper, this is where you need to look carefully. If the resulting groove is very thin, then there's no cleaning needed and your chimney is all right.

However, if there is, then it's a warning sign that you should get a professional cleaning soon. If you have 1/4 inch of creosote, don't use the fireplace again until it's nice and clean, because from then on a chimney fire could occur any time.

It's important for you to remove creosote while it's relatively easy to clean. The most difficult to remove is the third type of creosote, a coating that resembles road tar, and is nearly impossible to remove. The final stage is most deadly: this is a shiny coating that looks a lot like glaze, covering the flue and is virtually impossible to remove.
