Quick and Easy Tips on Eliminating Pet Odors from Your Carpet

Allowing your pets to run around and live inside your home has its fair share of advantages and disadvantages. For the most part, having their presence constantly around you, strengthens your bond and nurtures your pet owner skills. Some responsibilities such as grooming and feeding become much easier to manage, and are done in a comfortable environment.

However, unlike humans, pets love to leave their scent on objects to mark their territory. Most of these scents are meant to warn other animals, but once you, or any other person, smell something odd in your carpets, it is about time to have your pets housebroken, and your carpets cleaned.

These odors usually come from your pet’s urine or defecation. Leaving these substances on your carpets or cleaning them with inefficient methods will lead to serious skin and respiratory illnesses, and leave a horrible stench and stain in your carpets.

If your pet has not mastered relieving her/himself outside, follow these simple tips and your carpets, and your home, will always smell fresh after each “accident."

Find the Soiled Area Pronto!

In some cases, using your nose is much better than using your vision, because relying on your sight is not enough to pinpoint the exact location of the blemished area. If it is still too difficult to spot the area, you may purchase a black light to identify old and new stains.

Once you have found the soiled area, you can now proceed to the deodorizing proper.

Homemade Cleaning Solutions

There are various cleaning mixtures that can be created with items that can be found in your home. These concoctions may not have the same efficiency as store bought home cleaning solutions, but will get the job done.

Vinegar-Baking Soda Spray

What you’ll need:

  • 2 cups of distilled white vinegar
  • 2 cups of lukewarm water
  • 4 tablespoons of baking soda
  • Spray bottle for storing purposes

To make this spray, mix 2 cups of white distilled vinegar with 2 cups of lukewarm water in a large bowl before you add in 4 heaping tablespoons of baking soda.

How it is used:

Spray the afflicted area thoroughly and leave it for five minutes. After that, you must blot, not scrub, the pungent area, to avoid spreading the scent on your carpet. If the scent still persists, you may liberally spread baking soda on the area and let it sit for five minutes, before you proceed to vacuum your carpet.

Hydrogen Peroxide/ Baking Soda Mixture

What you’ll need:

  • Paper towels or rags
  • At least 1 cup of baking soda
  • ½ cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide
  • 1 teaspoon of eco-friendly dish liquid
  • 1 bowl

Directions:

First, cover the blemished areas with paper towels. You may then place a heavy object or begin walking on top of them, to soak up all the excess liquids. Sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda over the area when no more liquid can be absorbed. You then mix the ½ cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide and 1 teaspoon of dish liquid, before pouring it over your carpet. Gently scrub the mixture with a scrub-brush or cloth, and then let it sit for 10-15 minutes. Once that is done, vacuum the area thoroughly. Repeat this process only if the stain and odor are a bit difficult to remove.

Citrus-Enzyme Cleaner

What you’ll need:

  • 7 tablespoons of brown sugar
  • 1 ½ cups of lemon and orange peels/scraps
  • 1 liter of water
  • 1 bottle or clear container that can hold the mixture

Unlike the other two methods and homemade solutions, this mixture takes more time and patience to create.

Directions:

Funnel 7 tablespoons of brown sugar into your chosen container, before adding in the fruit peels/ scraps. Next, add the water, and tightly screw on the cap, before giving it a good shake. Loosen the cap and leave it on halfway to release the gases and ensure your bottle doesn’t explode due to the build-up. After 3 months, this natural enzymatic cleaner will be ready to use!
